The gauge symmetries of general relativity

Resumen:

General relativity is based on the principle of general covariance, which at the level of the action principle is embodied in its invariance under diffeomorphisms. This symmetry, together with the invariance under local Lorentz transformations, comprise the set of gauge symmetries of general relativity in the first-order formalism. On the other hand, Noether's second theorem can be used to unveil non trivial identities among the equations of motion from gauge symmetries and vice versa. In this talk, we use the converse of Noether's second theorem to find the gauge symmetries of general relativity, showing that from its implementation emerge local Lorentz transformations as well as a new internal gauge symmetry whose properties we will discuss. Since diffeomorphisms can be constructed out of these two symmetries, we can take the new gauge symmetry instead of diffeomorphisms as a theory's fundamental symmetry, thus obtaining a description of the full gauge symmetry of general relativity in terms of internal symmetries.
